Configure Windows 11 for Data File Uploads

Before creating a data file for upload to a registry, verify that your Windows regional settings are configured correctly. These settings help ensure that dates and delimiters are formatted properly in exported files.

Note: These instructions apply to Windows 11. Menu names and locations may vary slightly depending on your organization's configuration and Windows version.

Update the Short Date Format

  1. Select the Start button and open Settings.
  2. Select Time & Language.
  3. Select Language & Region.
  4. Under Regional format, select Change formats.
  5. Set Short date to MM/dd/yyyy.

This setting helps ensure that leading zeros are retained in dates within the upload file.

Next:

Change the List Separator Character

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Clock and Region.
  3. Select Region.
  4. Select Additional settings....
  5. Locate the List separator field.
  6. Replace the comma (,) with a vertical bar (|).

Do not use the drop-down arrow. Click inside the field, delete the comma, and enter the vertical bar (pipe) character using Shift + \.

Example:

  • Current value: ,
  • New value: |

Save the Changes

  1. Select Apply.
  2. Select OK.
  3. Select Apply again if prompted.
  4. Select OK to close the Region window.

Important

Windows will continue using the vertical bar (|) as the list separator for all applications until the setting is changed back.

After completing your data upload, you may wish to restore the original list separator by following the same steps and replacing the vertical bar (|) with a comma (,).
